Creating Your Home Yoga Studio

With all the craziness that the Covid pandemic has brought to us, the one thing we as people will always do is adapt. But being able to have that sense of community and being in an environment with the calming ambiance that a yoga studio provides makes us wish that we could get back to “normal”. As we adapt to our new normal, some of us have now created a new normal by bringing our practice to our home.

As I brought my practice into my home I have learned that I can also replicate the things I love from being in a yoga studio and bringing it ito my own yoga space at home. Below are a few tips that you can use to create your own yoga space at home.

Finding your space: You do not need much of a space to make it your own. You will just need enough space to roll out your mat and be able to practice on your mat free of obstruction so you can move freely in and out of your asanas. You will need a space that is quiet, uncluttered and distraction free. Being able to meditate, ground and focus on uniting the movement of body, breath, and mind are all things you should be able to do in this space.

Make room for your equipment: The beautiful thing about yoga is that you don’t need a lot of equipment! As you dive deeper into your practice you will notice you may end up with equipment that will help you be more present on your mat-I know I have. Having your mat and props available as you practice are key.

Creating Mood Lighting: What kind of lighting do you like to practice in? Is it full sunlight? Is it by candlelight? Whatever it is that gets you present on your mat, bring it into your new space.

Scent: Do you remember that distinct smell when you walked into a yoga studio? Smelling a certain scent can change your feelings instantly as you associate it with the emotions you feel when smelling it. Whatever scent it is that calms you, bring it into your space. Some like burning sage or palo santo to clear the energy before practice. Maybe it’s the smell of patchouli that calms you. Whatever scent you decide on, add it to your practice at home.

Decorate: Decorating is much like your practice. It is space, your practice. Decorate on how you want your space to make you feel. Is it inspiration? Do you need a sanctuary from the craziness of day to day activities? Whatever it is, this is your space.

The main take away is, recreating what you loved and miss about being in a yoga studio is what you should bring to your new space in your home. Having the familiarity of the missed space will encourage you to go to your new found space not as a place you HAVE to go to, but a space that you look forward and enjoy going to daily. This in the end, will help you in the journey of your practice on your mat!
